Your May Workout Kit is here!

Your May workout kit is here.

This month’s theme is Power Drive — and I want to talk for a second about why that word, power, matters so much after 50.

If you’re reading this, getting stronger is probably one of your goals.

Strength is how much force your muscles can produce.

Power goes one step further, as it has to do with how quickly your muscles can produce that force. It’s one of the first things to go as we get older.

Here’s what power looks like in real life:

  • Catching yourself when you trip

  • Hoisting a bag into an overhead bin

  • Picking up a child

  • Pushing through a heavy door

  • Sprinting across the street or up the stairs

I noticed my power starting to slip when I was playing around with some old dance fitness choreography. It had been a while since I’d practiced, and when I went in for a leap, it felt like my muscles forgot what a leap was.

I could almost hear them saying, “WTF are you trying to do to us, Wendy????”

It was time to start paying attention to my own power training!

(If you see me doing some weird leaps while I’m walking the dogs along the track, now you’ll know why.)

Research shows that power declines faster than strength with age, and that the loss starts earlier than most people expect. But here’s the good news: you can train for it. And you don’t have to do anything extreme or risky to do it.

That’s exactly what this month’s workouts are designed for. Power Drive is about loading up the movements that matter — squats, hinges, presses, carries — and doing them with intention and a little more challenge than you’re used to.

PS: Next up: I’m working on a post about why working your glutes is even more important after 50 that I think you’ll love!
